Both the reading and the listening discuss whether self-driving cars are advantageous or not. While the reading says that autonomous cars are advantageous, the listening passage disagrees with three valid reasons.
Firstly, the author asserts that self-driving cars are safer than normal cars as they are operated by advanced and error-free softwares. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that since the softwares and other automatic guidance systems used in such cars are built by humans, there is an equal chance of humans building a flawed system. He goes on to say that such a system in self-driving cars may make the road less safe than the other cars.
Next, the reading puts forth the idea that autonomous vehicles are environment-friendly means of transportation because they help to reduce traffic problems which is one of the causes of pollution. The listening passage, however, argues that the hazards to the environment will arise as the demand for driverless cars increases.
Finally, the author claims that self-driving cars provide extra time to humans by excluding driving time and help them to give attention to other important life activities such as work, entertainment, etc. However, this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He insists that driving is good for taking a break from the hassle of life and if driverless cars take over the normal cars, then there will be no break. People will continue to be engaged in their usual activities.
