How's/How are?

How's/How are the wife and kids?

I know "how are" are grammatically correct, but I believe I have heard "how's" used in sentences like this many times before (am I correct?), so would just hear if that is considered okay too?

  • It is OK and common in informal conversation (as is 'kids').
  • Native speakers use it for two subconscious reasons: (1) spoken language is linear (hence only one subject is conceived at a time) and (2) 'how's' is easier to pronounce.
