However/ Whatever

We were told that we could complete this assignment however we pleased.

Dear teahcers,

Can we change "however" to "whatever"? Why or why not?

Please advise.

No. however = in any manner that whatever = any ... that (in place of an adjective) whatever = anything that (in place of a noun) You can complete the assignment however (in any manner that) you want.
