Would you please explain when is more appropriate to use "however" instead of "but"?

e.g.

I don't like sandwiches, but I like it when I made it.

Thank you dear Clive,
Your explanations were great, but I didn't understand this part : "Use it when you want to put your thoughts in two separate sentences.". I mean I guess the two sentences would clear the differences between two ideas up not expressing two separate ideas. Right?

e.g.
Which one is better?
The house was excellent, however, the neighborhood was so crowded.

I find that, after I teach semi-colons, my students write pages full of them. It looks silly to me.

Very briefly, here's how I see it,

Hey Clive, That was very good. I guess I used semi-colon wrong too; however, I would use it with transitions like "however", "moreover", "furthermore", and the other ones. I use it sometimes with "although". Could you please give more explanations? I am not sure when and where should I use "semi-colon". Of course, this is not the title of the post, but I guess that would be kind of relevant to "ho
