However

Hello,

1.She didn’t win the contest; however, she managed to deliver a satisfactory performance.

2.She didn’t win the contest. However, she managed to deliver a satisfactory performance.

Are the both sentences the same only written in different style?

When do we (;) or (.)?

Please explain it to me as I am very confused about the usage of ; and full stop (.).
Thanks.
