'however'

They say to cook it for however long, usually 8 to 10 mins.

I think 'however' is a conjunction here.

What is it joining though (has to be two equal sentence parts)?

Thanks

however long: an undetermined amount of time In this case, 'however' would be an adjective.

Could it also be an adverb?

However much you hurt me, I won't cry.

I've read it being used as such. My dictionairy only listed 'however' as a conjunction or adverb. No mention of it's being an adjective.
