I don't think I would say it at all. It doesn't mean much. It sounds like he takes on a different personality from time to time, based on his studies.

If this sentence is related to the other one you posted, and I think it is, then I think you're just saying he changes his major every time he starts work on another degree, so say that.

That's what I say. We don't 'major in' subjects in the UK.
