How would you punctuate this sentence?

In the following four boxes, although the number eight or nine appears at the bottom, no rule is broken because both numbers appear together.

Please can you tell me if I have punctuated this sentence correctly. Should I remove the comma before ' although' because it sounds as if the words between the commas aren't important but they are necessary for the correct meaning.

With or without the comma, the sentence does not read well to me. I'd reword it thus. Although the number eight or nine appears at the bottom in the following four boxes, no rule is broken because both numbers appear together.
