How would you explain this?

My teacher trainee said "By using personalization questions, the teacher CAN GET the students interest".

I recommended 'By using personalization questions, the teacher can make the students interested'. I had trouble explaining why though. Is this simply a matter of collocation or something deeper?

Thank you!

I don't like either one. I suggest this: By using personalized questions, the teacher can gain the students' interest.

So you wouldn't say 'make someone interested' is a good phrase? Seems natural to me as an American?
