How would you construe this?

Hi,

I have a sentence from the Bible and please tell me how you would interprete this.

They were on their way to buy the oil.

1. Are they on their collective (one) way to buy the oil?

2. Are they on each different way to buy the oil?

I'd take it that they are going together unless other content made it clear that they were not.
