How would you ask the first question? Which is correct and when to use which?
1 Where is you name from? It doesn't sound American. My name is British.
2 What is the origin of your name? It doesn't sound American. My name is British

Both are OK, but I would omit 'It doesn't sound American', as this remark seem

I think it might be taken by some Americans to suggest that they themselves are in some subtle way not America. Names and identities are closely entwined.
