How would you ask the first question? Which is correct and when to use which?
1 Where is you name from? It doesn't sound American. My name is British.
2 What is the origin of your name? It doesn't sound American. My name is British

Both are OK, but I would omit 'It doesn't sound American', as this remark seem

I think it might be taken by some Americans to suggest that they themselves are in some subtle way not America. Names and identities are closely entwined.

It also raises the question of what the speaker means by the idea of 'an American name'. Does it iimply, for example, that a Muslim-sounding name is in some way not American?
