How would

Hi,

How would you like to be rich? What does the word "how" contribute to the sentence in terms of meaning? If I say "Would you like to be rich?", do I intend to say or emphasize something else?

Thanks...

I think that if you say 'How would you like to be rich?', you're asking for the way to be rich. I mean, in what way the person would like to be rich. But if you're asking 'Would you like to be rich?', you're asking for a wish. Examples:

a. How would you like to be rich?

b. Well, I'd like to be rich selling clothes.

a. Would you like to be rich?

"how" doesn't add very much. In this expression (How would you like ...?) "how?" doesn't mean "in what manner?" the same as it does in other circumstances.

The interrogative adverb "how" is a degree modifier. It questions the degree to which you would like to be rich.

Understood. Thanks to three of you. However I've realized something else in CJ's post which is off topic. Yet I'll ask for your help.

How come "by now" and future tense is together? If it's borderline or very casual, what's the more grammatical saying?

Thanks..

How come "by now" and the future tense are together?

Why not? This is a common combination. This is the will that is used to signal a reasonable conclusion.

Oh I see I was wrong. I didn't think of it in that way! Sorry...What a shame!

But I'm a little confused. In that question, 'How would you like to be reach?' is like a 'How much'? It's indicating amount, and not way. Am I right?

EmmanuellHow would you like to be reach?

EmmanuellIt's indicating amount, and not way.
Yes, that is correct.

-- How would you like ...? =~ How much would you like ...?

-- I would like that very much.
