How was?were? your holidays....

Is holidays a single noun? I hear people asking each other 'how was your holidays' all the time but since holidays is a plural noun, shouldn't it be 'how were your holidays'???

If I am right on the grammar than would it be safe for me to assume that people make such mistakes because people are confusing 'how was your vacation' with 'how was your holidays'?

With the plural word we need to use were, so it is better to say, how were your holidays?
