How was (your) work?

I often hear both the following expression.

"How was work going?"

"How was your work going?"

Are they the same in meaning?

They're the same in meaning.

I usually hear things like this in the present tense.

"How is your sister doing?" (Not "How was your sister doing?")

"How's the project coming?"

"How's life treating you?"

I suppose you could use past tense with an explanation, or prior context:

How had work been going before he hung himself?
