How was alphabetical order determined?

I have a feeling that "alphabetical order" does not originate from English, but how was it determined which letters come in which order? Is there any rhyme or reason to it?

I'm reminded of an ancient "Born Loser" cartoon, where Wilberforce, looking at the alphabet printed on a blackboard, asks his grade-school teacher, "How come all the letters are different?"
