There is no publicly accepted standard format in dates. They are dependent on region and culture.

The examples above would make sense to the majority of people though.

Avoid using the format 10/08/2000 - Americans and Europeans seem to have a different idea of which is the 'month' and which is the 'day'.

Good point! I believe you're correct in British English, but I think it's without a comma (I'm not certain): 4 September 2012

It's acceptable in British English with or without the comma.
