As Mister McCawber has already said your birthday as you gave it could be interpreted two ways - which is why it is sometimes better to write it (as you want to).

There are several ways (some not just in words the most common using numbers would be)

1st. June 1971 or 6th.January 1971. (This is OK for most practical purposes - January can be shortened to Jan)

You will find that most (if not all) English newspapers put the day AFTER the month (when month is written) It isn't just Americans who do it. I noticed that some years ago and haven't seen any exceptions since.
