How to write a good message

Hi everyone, I have to write a message to a guy I’ve never meet or talked before. I need some information but I don’t know what to say! Please, what would you write him? (Look my example below!)

“Hi J.,

my name is X, I’m a friend of Sam. I hope not to bother you! He gave me your number because I’d like to visit Rome on December and I’m looking for some suggestions about the place. I know you come from there, can I ask tou some information about?

X”

“Hi Jacobo; My name is Janice. My friend Sam Smith gave me your name and address, telling me that you are originally from Rome. I'm planning to go there next December for about two weeks and I am looking for suggestions as about where to stay and what to do.
