How to write a conditioanl statement, that occured in the past?

I need to write about a past event. At that time, I needed to take future into consideration to decide on the consequences.
I have a following sentence.

Adoption of the method would likely pose a problem if I would need to hand over the work to him in the future.

In the above sentence, which is correct?
a) would need to
b) needed to

Thank you.

As it turned out, did you adopt the method, and need to hand the work over to him, and was there a problem because of this? If not, I suggest: Adoption of the method would likely have posed a problem if I had needed to hand over the work to him in the future.

That appears to be correct in the context you have described.

That use of would likely jars with this speaker of BrE. I'd use either would probably or would be likely to.

In my opinion, "would likely pose ... if I needed" may work if you are writing about the past in an "in the moment" style. If you are writing retrospectively, I feel it should be "would likely have posed ... if I had needed".

Thank you GPY. I understand it better. I need to write 'in the moment' style. (I had not realized the possiblity of two styles, till you pointed out).
