how to use " thus"

This study thus demonstrates the principle that any genes that scientists introduce into a crop can quickly spread into wild populations.

my question is

thus can be placed as:

 Thus ,this study  demonstrates the principle that any genes that scientists introduce into a crop can quickly spread into wild populations.

Can I use " therefore" replace  "thus"?
