How to use the word "expenditure"

In Longman dictionary, "expenditure" means that "the total amount of money that a government, organization, or person spends during a particular period of time". So what is correct in the two following sentences,

"The expenditure for advertising increased sharply between 1985 and 2000"

"The amount of expenditure for advertising increased sharply between 1985 and 2000"

Many thanks
