Certainly I wouldn't use 2) I don't really see how you could justify 1) I might use 'He always stands by his decision' instead, but 3) seems perfectly reasonable to me. 4) is natural.

Thank you very much, CJ:-) I've checked that out online and found that it has something to do with soldiers keep holding his guns and shooting even they themselves are being attacked by their enemies. It's always exciting to know new expressions. Thanks again.
