How to use "some" and can I leave it out?

I have heard that the expression “I bought melons yesterday” occurs only if I want to emphasize the fact that what I bought was melons, not oranges, apples, or bananas, and that “I bought some melons yesterday.” sounds more natural.

I have a question.

Does it sound natural if I omit “more” from the following sentence?

Back in 1975 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to add more channels to the Citizens Band (CB) frequencies.

I am not a native speaker of English. The point of my question is that I always wonder whether I should leave out "some" when I write sentences in English. " sounds more natural than "I bought melons yesterday" (unless I want to emphasize "melons"), what about the following sentence?
