how to use "so" in a sentence

The child was starving, homeless and had no parents or guardians. So, Mr.Earnshaw brought him bundled up in his greatcoat.
I'd like to know whether the comma is necessary after "So" or not. Please explain it to me. Thanks in advance.

I would use a comma there. but I agree that it's not essential.

I've moved away a considerable distance from the punctuation-mark-sprinkled methods I was taught at school, but I am probably more liberal with my commas than many today
