Personally, I think "confidence" here is a bit of a stretch. There's an important relationship between the two concepts, but it's not synonymy.

Many feel the recent world-wide banking/market collapse was caused by a loss of confidence in the integrity of the systems. As a result, the "security" of many people was destroyed.

In the US, we have confidence in the Social Security system. It was institutionalized by FDR to deal with the 1929 Wall Street collapse which so resembles the present one.

If you've worked for 30 years for a huge company that's been around for over a hundred years, and you have a good work record, and management likes you, you feel that you have security. That is, you feel that your future is secure - that you can plan on it - count on it - that if you behave yourself, you'll never have to worry that your family will starve or have to sleep on the beach. You have confidence in that security. We felt secure in the US because (before the twin towers) we had never been invaded by a foreign power. We had confidence in that security. (Now Bush has given us the Department of Homeland Security. After Hurricane Katrina our confidence in our security has somewhat eroded.)

Now we see grand old companies being wiped out in the wink of an eye. First we lose confidence in the security we think we're supposed to have. Then, we lose the security itself.

Now they say the Social Security System will go broke before our current young people can benefit from all the money they're paying into it. All the years of building confidence in the system no longer mean anything.

When people are young, they're often strong and beautiful and confident, and they feel confident they'll always be able to take care of themselves. They're mainly interested in ***, drugs, and rock 'n roll. Marriage would be a waste of time. They don't need or want the security of a long-term relationship. When they reach their 40's and lose some of their charms, they think, maybe I should have gotten married. At least I'd have someone to take care of me when I grow old.
