How to use "originate"

I've just looke up the word "originate" and wonder whether the following two expressions are both possible.

Tomatoes were not originated in Italy.
Tomatoes didn't originate in Italy.

So can I just conclude that "originate in" is far more common than "be originated in?"

The first of your sentences does not even seem like a possible English sentence.

If you compare "it was originated" with "it originated" on Google Ngrams, you'll find that "it was originated" is almost never used.

I see! Aijiro, which is a Japanese homepage for an on-line dictionary, lists the phrase "be originated in."
So I think it's always better to make sure whether the information they give is correct or not.
