How to use "LAST" as verb?

Many sentences used "last" as adj, but sometimes I saw "last" in sentences as verb, such as: "This second war, which lasted until the two sides became a single republic in 1976" (The Economist)
Does it mean "extend", "prolong" ?
Why we use it rarely? And how (and when) we use it properly ?
Thank you in advance so much !
