How to use inversion of "not only but it also" structure with "could"?

I would really appreciate it, if someone could tell me whether the usage of "not only but it also" structure with "could" is acceptable or not in terms of grammar


Because of the advancement in communication technology and medicine, generally, not only could people expect a longer life expectancy , but they also could experience a more convenient lives than in the past.
