In the following sentence what I wanted to mention was because of the parental instinct of parents, they tend to purchase a number of toys for their children. I would be really grateful, if someone could let me know whether the usage of "given" in the following sentence is appropriate or not.

It's not satisfactory. Instinctive behaviour would be nest-building in birds. I don't see how buying toys is in our genes.

Also, "offspring" is not a good word. That is used in biology in the context of reproduction of living organisms.
