how to use few

Hey guys, I wrote on my website this sentence:
you are a few steps away from achieving your goal.
My friend told me that it's not correct.. It should be like that:
you are few steps away from achieving your goal.

So we shouldn't add 'a' when we talk about plural thing like 'Steps'

I'm really confused.. How can we use a few if we're talking about a single thing? I thought that few is for plural things not single.

Can you please explain to me?
Thank you!

Mohamed Soufan 8379: Y ou are a few steps away from achieving your goal. That's fine and natural, though you might think about adding just before a few a few = some few = not many. In your sentence, a few is more natural.
