How to use "at" appropriately

According to my knowledge, "at the cinema" refers outside the building, while "in the cinema" indicate inside the building. In actual fact, I'm not precisely sure about this, though. Please someone tell me is it correct or not?

"at the cinema" can refer to outside the building, whereas "in the cinema" cannot. However, "at the cinema" also can (and often does) refer to inside the building.
