How to use "apply" in a sentence.

I have a question about how to use "apply" in the following sentence.

It's been proved by experiments on animals that a particular substance
found in certain kinds of fish can make the brain work better. However,
some scientists wonder if these findings

(1) can apply to human beings as well.
(2) can be applied to human beings as well.

Are both OK?

Neither sounds good to me. I suggest this. However, some scientists wonder if these findings apply to human beings as well.

Thank you for a wonderful suggestion. What do you think about this, then?

However, some scientists think it's doubtful whether these findings
can directly apply to human beings as well.

I want to insert the word "directly", in which case, does it still sound natural to keep "can"?

I don't see that 'can' adds anything to the sentence.
