how to use "and" and "or"

I am always confused about how to decide which to use. Could you help me with the following sentence?

Some people used to say that taking a certain medicine would increase the level of intelligence and/or that a certain food would impove the working of brain function.

Could you kindly tell me what difference it makes?

My impression is that "or" has a nuance that people may have said other things too in similar vein, whereas "and" feels more "exact" and "complete". "the working of brain function" doesn't seem quite right to me.

Oh, the working of the brain!! Thank you very much for pointing that out! Your explanation of the difference between "and" and "so" is also easy to understand:¥
