How to use 'allow' correctly

According to a book that I've read, verbs such as advise, allow, forbid and permit often use in follow formats.

verb + ing form (ex: The teacher allowed talking as long as it was in English)

verb + object + to + infinitive (ex: The teacher allowed us to talk as long as it was in English)

However, according to the google ngram results, it is more common to use 'allow to do' than 'allow doing'. Please someone tell me what is the correct form to use allow or similar verbs correctly.
