How to us "expense" and "expenditure" in IELTS task 1?

Hi natives,

I tend to use the words "expense" and "expenditure" to paraphrase for "money" in IELTS task 1.

Ex: "The amount of expenditure allocated for transportation is about $..."

"About 20% of expense in the country was invested in education"

I don't know why it's wrong in these situations, and how can I use these words in my essay? Please enlighten me!

Top answer

" That use seems OK to me. c Lê "About 20% of expense in the country was invested in education" That should be 'expenditure'. There is no hard rule but expenditures are usually on a greater, more formal scale than expenses.
