How to Understand This Sentence

I'm trying to make sure I understand the following instruction correctly: If you don't get a reply within a few days (3 at most) you can post in the topic.

If this means you have to wait 3 days before posting in the topic isn't it an awkward, unnecessarily verbose? Wouldn't it be better to write "if you don't get a reply in 3 days you can post in the topic."

Thanks, Lane

It's a casual way of telling you that it is not a rigid rule. Many things we say are not thought out carefully and precisely.
