How to understand the sentence with 'whose'?

Dear All,

I'm trying to understand the below sentence structure.

"That describes someone whose main communication with their children was to give them strict rules and tell them off or punish them if they did something wrong."

It's quite a bit confused to me. if you get this like sentence structure, how to understand ?
