How to understand the difference between words

Like "Denigrate" and "vilify." The only difference I noticed in dictionary is that "vilify" is written or spoken criticism while "denigrate" is a spoken criticism.

"By-product" and "Result." ex: The company's loss was a by-product of firing a lot of employees. The company's loss was a result of firing a lot of employees.
