How to talk to strangers?

Hi all,

I'm going to USA next week, I'm wondering what you say when you approach someone in public.
What are the customs of americans?
When I want to ask for directions, do I have to greet the people to whom I'm talking?

1) Hi sir/ma'am, could I ask you something? Do you know where...
Or is this sufficient?
2) Excuse me, do you know where...

When I want to check in the hotel, what do you say?
Hi, I've booked 2 rooms. I'd like to check-in.

What about entering a restaurant in USA? What do native speakers say?
Do you greet the staff or not?

Hi, table for 4 please.

Can someone help me out with this?

  • Do you know where...
  • 2) Excuse me, do you know where...
  • Those are both fine.
  • All you need is an introductory comment: 'Excuse me', 'Pardon me', etc.
