How to start a book report or film review

Hi. Let us pretend that I am trying to write a book report or film review. Could we start the writing like this? Would it possible to start with the present tense, followed by paragraphes summarizing the story or film content (plot?)? Do you have any other suggestions?

This is about a boy who lives with caring but poor parents and struggles to deal with insults from bad neighbor friends. It is a collage of hope and despair that culminates in the great illumination of hope that defies all normal predictions.
