How to spell numerical years?

On my way of English studying the qurious question came up: how to spell year 2217, for example? Will it be twenty two and seventeen or? Thanks for help.

You say that asking a foreigner might be useful. Could be. What do you mean by a foreigner? I'm American and I have asked several Americans about this and nobody has come up with a good answer.
