How to say this in perfect English?

Hello,
I am a new member and on upper intermediate level (or maybe higher).
if I want to know about my application status, can I say the following:
I would like to update with my application.

eg I would like an update on the status of my application. (slightly more informal)

The second example is just what I am looking for because I have heard it before but I couldn't catch it properly. Many thanks
