How to say this in crime scene

To more effectively attack the crime, the police will sometimes send into the gang a member of police, pretending as a gang member so that the ¡§gang member¡¨ (camouflaged by a police member) can collect the evidence of crime or even thwart the crime organization.

How do we call this tactic used by police? either one word or a slang/ idiom associated with this scene/situation?

Thanks

Mike

The law enforcement officer is said to be working "undercover." Note that "undercover" is one word, not two.
