In the US, the rank in high school is important, and the number one ranking student in a senior high school class is called the valedictorian. However, at the college level this is not that important, especially at a large state university where there are thousands of graduating senior undergrads, in hundreds of different majors. Even at a small liberal arts college this is not important, as there would be at least a hundred graduating undergrads in maybe a dozen different majors.
