how to say hello on the phone?

Hello everybody!

I would like to know how to say hello on the phone if I have to make a formal phone call to the U.S.

Should I start my call by saying : good morning, good afternoon (the problem is that if in my country is 3 p.m. (afternoon) in America is 9 a.m. (morning) ) or Hi, Hello (those two sounds a bit infromal to me)?

I would appreciate your help.

thank you

Hello Yogi 'Hello' would be fine; but 'good morning/afternoon' would be well received too. MrP

It just makes for a pleasant bit of wit at the other end, Yogi--

'Good morning. This is Mister Micawber calling from Yokohama...'
'Good evening! You caught us just before we close, here. How can I help you?'

Etc.
