How to response to "how was your birthday celebration"?

I would like to know the common response to the question "how was your birthday celebration?"

I usually response with "It was nice and enjoyed a lot with cakes and with friends".

That is fine if 'cakes' means several small cakes. Remember, though, that many people/cultures do not celebrate their birthdays with anything more than a casual acknowledgment of another year passed, so asking about a 'celebration' may be inappropriate. "
