How to replace?

I've met with a perfect English sentence: "Shall I tell them or would you rather they didn't know?" However, if I want to use "prefer" instead of "rather", how should I say? Is "Should I tell them or would you prefer they don't know?" correct?

Either "shall" or "should" is fine. My perception, as a native speaker of American English, is that "shall" is much more common in British use than in American use.
