How to rephrase the adjectives.

I am now trying to teach "deep-seated" and "deep-rooted," but before introducing these words to my students, I'd like to help them find some synonyms they could use if they didn't know those words. Is "fundamental" close enough in meaning?

Most of the fundamental ideas and knowledge come from reading I did in my youth.

Ah, teaching is tough in that you have to know your target audience in mind in preparing sample answers:-).

No, "fundamental" is different. Try "ingrained" or "entrenched."
