How to refer to one item out of a pair of things?

A member of a pair?

If one shoe is missing, how to refer to the missing shoe while relating to the existing one?

Top answer

I would refer to 'the other one of the pair'. I guess you could also say 'the second of the pair', but that sounds a bit awkward. This isn't a comprehensive answer, just giving you something to work with before someone thinks of something better!
