How to punctuate multiple choice questions

Is there a standard way to lay out multiple choice questions when the answer choices are all in a single paragraph? Much as I'd like to, I won't be able to put the answer choices on separate lines.

Here are two examples of the types of questions I'm trying to punctuate, capitalize and lay out. For each example I'll show the different ways I've considered punctuating.
Example 1:
-In which direction do trees grow? Up, down, or sideways. -In which direction do trees grow: up, down, or sideways? -In which direction do trees grow? Up, down, or sideways?

Example 2:
-Your grass has turned brown. Does this mean: 1) The grass is dead, 2) the grass is sleeping, or 3)the grass is growing upside down. -Your grass has turned brown. Does this mean: 1) the grass is dead, 2) the grass is sleeping, or 3)the grass is growing upside down? -Your grass has turned brown. Does this mean the grass is dead, the grass is sleeping, or the grass is growing upside down?

Thank you. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The "dash" bullet point looks odd, presumably you'll replace it with a (2) or 2) or 2. etc.
[nq:1]-In which direction do trees grow? Up, down
